Speaker

Tom O’Boyle, A/Chief Fire Officer, Sligo Fire Station

Tom has served in the Fire Service for the past 34 years and currently holds the position of Acting Chief Fire Officer for Sligo Fire Service, alongside his permanent role as Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer. Tom’s career began in 1992 with Bedfordshire Fire Service in the UK, where he gained his initial operational experience and developed a strong foundation in frontline firefighting and leadership.

In 2004, Tom relocated with his family to Sligo to take up the post of Station Officer at Sligo Fire Station, marking the beginning of his service within the Irish Fire Service. Recognising the educational requirements for senior leadership roles, he began working towards a Level 8 qualification in 2007 and graduated in 2012 with a Master’s degree in Environmental, Health & Safety Management from Athlone IT.

He was promoted to Assistant Chief Fire Officer in 2015 and advanced to Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer in 2021. Throughout his career, he has taken great pride in progressing through every rank—from recruit firefighter to senior leadership—gaining hands‑on experience at each stage and adapting to the unique challenges and responsibilities each role brings.

Tom has been at the forefront of implementing and continually improving Health & Safety policy and procedures, contributing to the development of a robust Safety Management System within Sligo Fire Service. In addition to Health & Safety, his responsibilities include Operations, Training, Procurement, and serving as a rostered Senior Fire Officer with on‑call duties.

Alongside his fire service career, Tom has also worked in the construction sector as a Carpenter and Joiner, having begun his apprenticeship in 1983. Tom has maintained a strong interest in the construction industry, particularly in how evolving building methods and regulations influence the way the fire service responds to structural fires and the challenges these changes present.
