24 Apr Workers' Memorial Day 2020
Workers’ Memorial Day
Tuesday, 28 April 2020
April 28 is the date every year when we remember those who have been killed or injured in work-related accidents. In 2019, 46 people in Ireland died as a result of work-related accidents and many more suffered serious injury.
This year, we find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic in which front line and essential workers are risking their own health every day by going to work. Their courage at this time needs to be acknowledged at this time. On this day, let us commemorate the healthcare workers who have lost their lives due to COVID-19 in the course of their work.
This Workers’ Memorial Day will be a little bit different with current public health measures that are in place but that shouldn’t stop us from taking a few moments out of our day to privately remember those who have died as a result of their work.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has suggested lighting a candle and posting your photo of it on social media to remember those who have died at work, for International Workers’ Memorial Day #IWMD20 on Tuesday April 28 at 9pm.
